Our Carpet Cleaning Tips and Tricks

It can sometimes feel like our lives are just too busy to tick everything we need to get done off our list. This is probably why more and more, we find ourselves seeking the most efficient way possible to get something done. When it comes to keeping our homes clean, the priority today is making things as straightforward and simple as possible. This can prove difficult though when it comes to the floors of your home.

In kitchens and hallways, where floors are often laminated and hardwearing, cleaning is a simpler task. Usually, a powerful vacuum cleaner is enough to get general dust and dirt sorted and cleaned up. And a steam cleaner can get things even cleaner. But in high traffic areas of your home that have carpets or rugs, getting a really deep clean can prove particularly difficult or challenging. To help give you a better chance of your rugs and carpets looking truly pristine, we’ve put together this handy blog covering great carpet and rug cleaning tips and tricks.

Dedicated carpet cleaners

Knowing what could be living between your toes within your carpet is actually a pretty stomach churning thought. Not only is there likely to be plenty of skin flakes and pet hair, but the chances are there are plenty of dust mites and other nasties that also call your home, well, home. This isn’t just gross - it can be bad for you and your family. Dust allergies are a common problem that can make you sniffy and feeling horrible. Having a dedicated carpet cleaner to hand can help you get right into the deepest parts of your carpet. You can remove the dust, dirt and grime that’s not always visible to the naked eye. Having a carpet washer to hand can not only get things clean, but it can help you and your family avoid nasty allergies too.

Wet or dry?

There are two main ways to approach cleaning your carpet - the wet approach and the dry approach. These are some of the factors to consider when deciding which is best for you: Wet carpet cleaning includes steam cleaning and hot water extraction. You also get foam extraction method and rotary shampoo method. In all these methods, water and selected chemicals are sprayed into the carpet then immediately sucked out again, taking dust and grime with it. Dry carpet cleaning sees chemicals sprayed into the carpet. These chemicals absorb the dirt and grime, before turning into a crystallised powder. You then need to vacuum the carpet to pick up that powder. Each approach has its benefits. Wet requires no after work, but your carpets often need a few hours of drying time. Dry cleaning doesn’t have the wet element, but you do need to vacuum your carpet thoroughly once complete. Our tip is to stick with the wet carpet cleaning approach. We’ve got nothing against the dry clean method, but think that wet carpet cleaning generally does a better, deeper job.

Air movers

You might have come across air movers in your search for carpet cleaning perfection. These don’t offer a carpet cleaning method in and of themselves, but are a great way of making wet carpets dry quickly. You simply run the air mover over the wet carpet to help speed up the drying process. This means that after a clean, you can quickly get those high traffic areas of your home back in action. Stains are an absolute nightmare for any house proud person. They can come in a range of colours, shapes and styles. But these horrible things are far from a collector’s item. We highly recommend baking soda as a great way to tackle nasty stains on light coloured carpets, as well as white vinegar. You can also take preventative measures to prevent staining, including stain protectors for different types of carpets and upholstery protection applications.
