5 ways to Extend the Life of your Vacuum Cleaner

When you purchase a new item for your home, you want it to stand the test of time. Naturally, sometimes things need replacing and upgrading, but there’s no reason for you not to get the most out of anything you buy. When it comes to extending the life of your vacuum cleaner and looking after it, there are a few handy things you can do. We’ve picked out five tips to help you make the most of your purchase.

Be strategic When it comes to your approach to a vacuuming task, have a think before you start. Where needs your attention most? Heavily used areas need regularly vacuuming, but don’t waste time by vacuuming areas that don’t require it. By taking this approach to a cleaning task, you can shorten the amount of time you’re actually cleaning floors, thus lessening the strain you put on the cleaner itself. Also – and this may seem obvious to many readers – but avoid moisture at all costs. This can be massively damaging to even the best vacuum cleaner, so don’t vacuum anywhere that contains moisture if you want to prolong your cleaner’s life. Change bags and filters Be vigilant and proactive when it comes to checking the state of your bags and filters. If they need replacing, do so! Leaving these items for too long and asking them to do too much will only cause problems that are avoidable with regular care and attention. Check cords and plugs Damage to the cords and plugs of your vacuum cleaner is one of the biggest reasons people end up having to buy new items. Overstretching the cord can cause damage, as can wrapping, twisting or running it against sharp or tough surfaces around your home, such as on furniture. Try not to ask your cord to do more than it can handle, as this increases the chances of damage being caused. Similarly, when it comes to removing a plug once you’ve finished, don’t just yank the cord! If you want to elongate your vacuum cleaner’s life, disconnect the plug as you would with other items. Don’t be lazy! Use attachments Most vacuum cleaners today come with attachments to get cleaning tasks done. These are there to be used and not just left to ironically acquire dust themselves. Certain areas of your home such as stairs are more suited to using attachments. So don’t lug your vacuum cleaner up them to save time, as damage could be incurred. Use the attachments and you can protect your cleaner. Don’t pick up large items We all know that sound when a coin goes whistling into your vacuum cleaner. And we’re familiar with the strained noise when a large item is sucked up. Bringing these kinds of things into your vacuum cleaner can cause damage to tubing and the vacuum cleaner on the inside, so before starting a task, scan the area for larger items to avoid. We stock a host of excellent new and refurbished vacuum cleaners at Direct Vacuums, so don’t miss out. And, once your new arrival is with you, do what you can to make it last for a long, long time!
